Athletic director

Possible candidates for the next athletics director:

Brad Teague: Jackson native, worked previously in the Loyalty Foundation at Ole Miss, has been successful AD and Delta State and currently at Central Arkansas. Between the two schools he has nine years AD experience.

John Hartwell: Presently carries the title of senior executive associate athletics director. Football scheduling is among many management duties. Also serves as COO for the UMAA Foundation.

Walker Jones: Ole Miss football player in the late 90s. Staff member from 2001-2008 leaving while serving as assistant athletics director for internal affairs. Presently director of sports marketing for Under Armour.

Danny White: Senior associate athletics director and executive director UMAA Foundation. Credited for restructuring "Vaught Society," which encompasses gifts of more than $5,000 annually. Previously worked in athletics at Ohio University and Fresno State. Father, Kevin White, is currently athletics director at Duke.

Names to Watch

Possible candidates for the next football coach:

Kirby Smart: Defensive coordinator for Alabama coach Nick Saban since 2007. Highly regarded for his defensive intellect and energetic recruiting. Former Georgia player.

Gus Malzahn: Auburn offensive coordinator. Successful at Auburn and in a two-year stop as assistant head coach and co-offensive coordinator a Tulsa. He left Arkansas in 2006, a messy break-up with Houston Nutt after one season.

Kevin Sumlin: Houston head coach is known for his explosive offense. Currently has a Heisman-level quarterback at the wheel in Case Keenum. Sumlin is 26-16 as Cougars' head coach since 2008.

Mike Leach: Former Texas Tech coach went 84-43 and shared a Big 12 South title in Lubbock. Wide open offensive coach also known for his eccentricity.

Tommy Tuberville: Replaced Leach at Texas Tech coach and is 13-9 through two seasons. Gained national attention for Red Raiders' upset of No. 1 Oklahoma earlier this year but followed that up by losing big to Iowa State. Followed interim Ole Miss coach Joe Lee Dunn and left for Auburn following the 1998 season.

Get somebody good at DEFENSE! Ole Miss throughout the years could score some points (prior to this year) but would lose the game due to shoddy defense.

NO, NO, NO! Tuberville is NOT a possibility. It'll be a cold day in Hell before the liar comes back to Ole Miss!

@fdrussell: Thanks for keeping the conversation civil! Stay classy!

You're right, I seriously doubt that Mike Leach would care about YOUR thinking.

I was referring to the people with whom he'd have to work not the general citizenry.

Apparently most people reading what I wrote got that, but apparently you didn't. So, I'm glad I could clarify that for you!

Looks like an easy job to me. If he gets the same deal as Nutt he gets a guarantee of big money and if he does not produce no big deal.

Seriously though, I do not know if Leach would be the "best" fit and a short term fix isn't whats needed.

KUDZU...BUTTON YOUR HOLE YOU CALL A MOUTH!!

If Mike Leach is called on for an interview, I don't think my conservative thinking and my overalls would get in the way of Mike Leach's thinking of Mississippi. $$$$$ TALKS A LOT!!

There's NO WAY that Mike Leach would come to Ole Miss.

First of all, he's too unconventional for the "in the box thinkers" in this part of the country.

Secondly, he's smart enough to recognize that he'd be surrounded by conservative/conventional thinkers and it would be his worst nightmare to take a job at a school in Mississippi.

I don't believe there's anyone on the coaches list here that will be in the running, except maybe Fulmer. I don't think Fulmer is the answer. Ole Miss needs a young up and comer. Again, I say that Kent Austin is probably odds on. Kirby Smart will NOT be interested in Ole Miss. He will only give up his position at UA for a school that has a strong history of winning and tradition. Although Ole Miss might have fit that mold at one time, its been too many years to be relevant. Tubs back to Ole Miss? I'm surprised that Parrish with his knowledge of area sports would have printed that one. There's still alot of animosity with Tubs because of the way he left. He may be washed up anyway because TT aint looking all that great either. I say Austin or a coach from the championship subdivision (got it right this time)would be wise but would take some work to find the right one.

Archie should put his own name in the hat for AD. Manning is a name you can rally around.

With Archie heading up the committee, don't be surprised if Phil Fulmer or David Cutcliffe are in the mix. Fulmer is possible since he was a successful head coach with Peyton and did produce a National Championship. Cutcliffe is probably in his mind because of his experience with both Peyton and Eli. Remember it was Boone's micromanagement that doomed Cut the first time around. I'm not saying these are the best candidates, but they are realistic possibilities.

Obviously you have comprehension problems "dirtydog"...the committee headed by Archie Manning isn't complete yet, so how would they be providing names? We'll take care of finding our own coach, meanwhile you can go back to licking yourself now.

Lets not forget Ranger John Smith. He did pretty well with Yogi the bear. Maybe Boo Boo will assist.
