TUPELO - Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant said Monday that "Satan wins" if voters reject Initiative 26 that defines personhood at fertilization.

"This is a battle of good and evil of Biblical proportions," the Republican gubernatorial nominee told a pro-26 rally attended by about 30 supporters at Tupelo City Hall.

Bryant appeared with American Family Association's Rev. Donald Wildmon, U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker and Rep. Alan Nunnelee in support of the initiative.

Cristen Hemmins of Oxford, an opponent, attended the event with four other anti-26 advocates. Hemmens, who was raped and shot twice during a kidnapping as a college student, asked Bryant, "Why can't you men have any sympathy for women like me?"

Bryant told her he is sympathetic to situations like hers but said he believes "that the child has some rights, too, even in that condition."

Bryant faces Democratic nominee and Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree in today's election for governor. DuPree also supports the initiative.

We are so bound up with the politically correct that ugly words like 'personhood' erupt from the mouths of its advocates like the spume from Victoria Falls. Unfortunately, the term is almost meaningless. Unless, as in this case you wish to make a universal declaration of altered meaning. A person is someone with autonomy ; people (plural of person) can make decisions that affect their lives and other lives. A zygote can do non of these things and is therefore not a person. But it is a pre-embryonic child, so why not now take the brave step of saying 'we wish to extend the definition of a child to encompass that pre-division of cells from the moment of conception up to the time that the child can legally make autonomous decisions'.

The implications for a woman pregnant as a result of rape are enormous. Should society condemn a woman to nine month of gestation followed by a lifetime of enforced parenthood as a punishment for being raped? That decision must always be with the woman, even a husband or "partner" has limited say, although there are implications there too. If it is known that the developing child will be so affected that its quality of life will be poor and involve great and prolonged suffering, do we say 'life is paramount over all other considerations?

Liked the video, subscribed to your channel. The debate over 26 really brought out the ugly side of a lot of Christians. I'm so glad Mississippi made the right choice.

"Just because you have the right or freedom of choice given to you by law of the land, it dosen't mean it supercede's God's law!"

But it DOES mean God's law takes effect not in this lifetime, but in the next one. In the meantime, Man's law and the U.S. Constitution are in charge. That's just the way it is.

I feel as if we should give women the chance to make the right choice instead of forcing them into a decision they will grow to resent. Even the Lord gives us a choice whether to follow him or reject him. He placed the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil in the garden of Eden. Why do you think he put it there? It is because He is a God of Free Will. Let's love on, support, and educate pregnant women as to their options and provide them every opportunity to keep their child. At the end of the day that's the best you can hope for. I am a Christian and I personally voted against Initiative 26. I don't think God condemns me for it because he believes in free will too.

I think it is absolutely pitiful that we have got to where we are on this whole issue. We are mortal beings, created by God! What gives us the authority or the right to be so callous, as to think we have the right to use a bic pen to shade in an area on a peice of paper to decide another human being's life? Choice? Yes God gave us the right to choose! Who are we to second guess when life begins? We wouldn't even have this debate if we had just let well enough alone in the first place! We never had the RIGHT to take an innocent life! Just because you have the right or freedom of choice given to you by law of the land, it dosen't mean it supercede's God's law! I had no control or input on the Roe vs Wade case, nor did any of you! But, we were given the chance to have a voice on the matter at the polls and we failed miserably. Even if you voted yes, no, or not at all, you responded! You can be sure that we all will answer to a higher court one day and answer for our responses!

Satan, Schmatan. Christianity has its own Taliban, and it's Tupelo-based. Thank you, fellow MS voters, for helping defeat 26.

Oh Lawd, de debbul's gonna get you ef you don't watch out! Criminy...is this what we're reduced to? I'm sorry, but in my opinion, if you're any kind of Christian and you do believe in the power of God, you've got nothing to fear from the devil. Also, if you don't believe in him, then it's just a hilarious joke.

@seve64

There, you've done it. You make the perfect argument for extra late term abortions, e.g., yourself.

The last thing you want is someone with a law degree legislating. You want the loonies to run the asylum. There's the problem!

That's like saying you don't want anyone with a medical degree practicing medicine. Stick with witch doctors.

What we really need is for the Angel of Death to visit the Magnolia State and take out the bottom 75% of the gene pool, as based on SAT scores (yeah, I know, they give the ACT's here -- they're achievement based, SATs are IQ based which is what you lack). Then we'd stand a chance.

Cheers!

Winston_Smith, you said it better than I did. If MS wants to enact a new law, it should be that no one with a law degree can run for public office. We need people in office that aren't demigods, or at least some with smaller egos who might consider that they are not the judge and jury for personal decisions (religion, how to raise your family, education, etc. etc.)

If 26 fails satan wins? Go back to the dark ages you ignorant hayseed. We don't need gomers like you in 2011. How about, if you want to help Mississippi, you shut your mouth about controversial issues that have nothing to do with actually governing, and focus on something like bringing our state's education rating up from the very bottom of the list, that would be nice. Then again, with statements like that, I don't want you touching the education system with a ten foot pole. How about we bring back witch burning in MS? That'll show satan!

YU-55 is circling earth, ole Satan may be sending it to pick up all the sinners who voted against int 26 today. Or God could be sending it to get rid of all the judgmental hypocrites who are trying to do his job. He's gonna have one heck of a time sorting us out. The moon also has a ring around it, reckon that could be a BC device or an omen?

MS06, has a different view on the post about the 2 kids living in a tent. Something like, forced to have kids, abortion still legal & there were other options available to prevent pregnancy, but supposely voted for 26. I'm assuming it is samems06. May not be.

When are people going to understand that they need to keep government (lawyers) out of personal decisions. By the time the lawyers get through with the law, and all of the fine print they will put in it, doctors won't be able to sneeze without fear of being sued. Why do you think insurance, health care, etc., is out the roof? Lawyers, lawsuits, plain and simple. Keep the lawyers out of your personal business whether you are liberal or conservative.

Reckon his wife used any type of bc? She could be considered a murderer, or his daughters if he has any. With statements like that, someone should have before he got here.
