ESPN is reporting there has been contact between the Tennessee administration and Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt about the Vols’ suddenly vacant football position.

In text correspondence a few minutes ago Nutt said neither he nor his agent, Jimmy Sexton, have been contacted by the Vols.

ESPN has also reported that the Vols were turned down today by Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp and that Nutt and former Tampa Bay coach Jon Gruden have been contacted.

“That’s so wrong,” Nutt said, at least for his part of the equation. “I love what we have going on at Ole Miss.”

Nutt was contacted and in fact had discussions with Kansas about its vacancy in December.

Update 1:48 p.m.

Spoke with AD Pete Boone a few minutes ago. Boone is getting ready to leave tomorrow for his tour of Nike manufacturing plants in Southeast Asia. Says Boone:“I’m leaving tomorrow, and we’ll meet this afternoon to catch up on everything. I think it’s just all rumors right now. I don’t anticipate him talking with them. I do think they’ll move pretty fast or will want to.”

Boone says the meeting is so Nutt will know how to reach him during his trip if something comes up.

Update 4:57 p.m.

No news to report. About to go into Stegeman Coliseum. Here’s a Sporting News link from earlier in the day that has UT talking to Fulmer. LINK

Here’s another ESPN link that has Gruden turning them down. LINK

Update 5:08 PM

Just talked with Pete Boone. He did meet with Nutt this afternoon as he expected he would. He said Nutt told him “there’s nothing going on with Tennessee.”

Update 5:44 p.m.

Though Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp reportedly had turned down Tennessee earlier, rumors are surfacing that indicate he is still a candidate for the job.

I don't see Nutt hanging around Ole Miss too much longer and not moving to Tenn either. He appears more adapted to the schools West of the river. Probably that is where his next move will take him. Ole Miss possible winding up with a 7-8 win next season and that could be the end of the line for Coach Nutt at Ole Miss. OM fans must reallize that the 60's Rebel teams no longer exist and wont. Too much competition out there to challenge them.

...to further expand on the analogy you used about your wife, if every once in a while somebody admired your wife and tried to take her that would be flattering, but you would be mad at whoever did it. But, if it keeps happening all the time, people coming after your wife, well then wouldn't you want to know if maybe she's doing something to encourage all of these suitors?

That's not the point. Of course you want a coach that other people want, but this is rediculous. You don't see other proven winners' names coming up on every job. He's not the only proven winner in coaching, but he's the only one whose name comes up for EVERY opening.

Ever notice that Orgeron's name never comes up when there is an opening at another school? Maybe Ole Miss should ask to get Coach O back so no one will be interested in taking our coach?

The reason his name comes up is he is a proven winner. I personally don't want us to have a coach that no one else would want. Nutt says he loves what he has at Ole Miss. If you think he is lying, why not just donate to the alumni and buy him out and get rid of him. I personally really wouldn't want to have a coach who no one else thought was desirable, just like I wouldn't want to be married to a woman that others didn't find desirable....

I think, as Ole Miss folks, it's time we had a serious discussion as to why Nutt's name comes up any time there's an opening. Is he the best college coach out there? Is Ole Miss looked at by the rest of the college world as a stepping stone job? Is Jimmy Sexton out there telling folks that he would leave for the right deal? Seriously, why?

PA, any thoughts?

Does Jimmy Sexton represent college grads too? As good as he is he could probably get me an upper management position in some big company next year. Its unbelievable what he can do for a coach. I mean he got Lane Kiffin a job at USC after he had been 5-15 in the NFL and then 7-6 at Tennessee. At this rate Kiffin will be the president of the NCAA soon wthout proving a single thing.

Blues you called it. Keep an eye on it and let me know what you hear. I'm getting back on the road to Athens.

PA, did I say Nutt is a serial job hunter?? Check your notes, please. Jimmy Sexton is probably in Knoxville as I type.
