Lee County Coroner Carloyn Gillentine-Green has confirmed that the man hit by a car while crossing North Gloster Street Monday night died at the North Mississippi Medical Center.

Sammy Keith Smith, 57, of Tupelo died at 9:30 p.m. in the NMMC Emergency Room, according to Gillentine-Green.

The accident happened around 6:30 p.m. on North Gloster Street across from Woody's restaurant.

Police say a Chevy Suburban was heading north on Gloster when Smith was hit.

Police are investigating, but do not suspect foul play.

Of course, if the driver had been paying attention and driving more slowly than most people do on that stretch of road, there wouldn't have been any accident in the first place. I think we have the rudest, worst, most distracted drivers I've ever seen anywhere. Since when is getting to the mall a couple of minutes sooner worth killing someone?

I don't believe it is the fault of paramedics. Their primary job is to stabilize before transporting. Transporting an unstable patient can cause serious damage. Plus he died some 3 hours later in the capable hands of the hospital ER.

I am not a doctor, but I would be willing to bet that the even the care that trained paramedics could provide on site would pale in comparison to the treatment received in the hospital. It's a pretty fair statement that getting to the hospital 30 minutes sooner, may have been lifesaving.

I guess every second does not count just because the paramedics have arrived?

I was the witness to this accident and it was terrible to see Mr.Smith go through this. I feel he could have made it through if the ambulance actually did not wait thirty minutes to take him to the hospital. R.I.P. Mr.Sammy Keith Smith!

Gosh, that's sad.

This is, what, the second pedestrian-vehicle collision in 2010? Not a good sign, considering all of 2009 had four pedestrian incidents and one was during a parade.
