Tupelo Middle School teacher wins scholarship to study in Mexico
- Tupelo Middle School Spanish teacher Mark Garrett received a Fulbright-Hays Scholarship from the U.S. Department of Education, which allowed him to spend five weeks in Mexico this summer.
The purpose of the scholarship is to allow teachers to enhance their lessons and create curriculum by studying other cultures. While in Mexico, Garrett was immersed with the local culture. He lived with families; visited schools, colleges and historical locations and even met with Congress. He visited 13 different states in the country.
“It is going to help me create more cultural units in the classroom,” Garrett said. “I was able to live with the families and to see how they are able to interact with each other. It also helped me understand the history of Mexico and its culture. It was a chance to meet with average citizens and see how they feel about their future and their hopes and dreams.”
