PONTOTOC – Playing at home has its advantages, especially in golf.
Clif Hanna, who will be a junior this year at Pontotoc High School, fired a 3-over-par 75 Monday at the Pontotoc Country Club to win his first tournament on this summer’s North Mississippi Coca-Cola Junior Tour.
Hanna entered the tournament on his home course fourth in the age 16-18 division point standings.
The points leader in his division, Austin Holt, finished third with a 77 while Corbin May, second on the points leaderboard, placed second with a 76.
“Being able to read the greens helps,” Hanna said on the advantages of playing your home course. “It helped me a little today, that and knowing where to hit it.”
Hanna recorded two birdies with a 5-foot putt on No. 6 and a 20-footer on No. 13, both par 3s.
“I made a lot 5-foot putts,” he said. “I got up and down well.”
Hanna’s previous best finish on the Tour this summer was a tie for second June 8 at River Birch in Amory.
“The key on this course is hitting the fairways and hitting greens,” he said.
Chase Taylor, the points leader in the age 14-15 division, added to his lead with a 78 and victory. Nick Rainey, 80, was second, followed by Scotty Lawrence, 82.
Miles Johnson won the age 12-13 division event, followed by Buckley Hayden, 80, and Tucker Jenkins, 81.
Hayden Palmer won the 10-11 division with a nine-hole score of 39 while Kelsey Gray took girls honors with an 89.
The next tournament stop is scheduled for July 14-15 at the Tupelo Country Club, when the Tour players compete in the annual Pros of Tomorrow event, which features regional, as well as local, players.
Players on the Tour earn double points for their finishes in the Pros tournament.
