Baldwyn's city leaders, much like their neighbors in Saltillo to the south, opted not to take a vote on allowing Sunday beer and light wine sales.

Like he did on Nov. 17 in Saltillo, business owner Murray Alexander spoke for several minutes to Baldwyn's mayor and board of aldermen.

Citing figures from a beer distributor, Alexander noted that beer sales in the past six weeks north of Tupelo's city limits had dropped 2 percent. Beer sales inside Tupelo for the same period were up 8 percent.

Alexander, who owns a store in both towns, said allowing Sunday beer and light wine sales would help keep much-needed tax dollars inside the respective communities.

But while Baldwyn officials asked several questions, none made a motion to bring the issue to a vote.

The leaders in Tupelo did just that. Most of us wanted Sunday sales, and we got 'em.

Congratulations on Saltillo's and Baldwyn's leaders respecting the wishes of the majority of residents that did NOT want Sunday sales. I wish the leaders in Tupelo had the same respect for its own citizenry...
