Mississippi State University police detectives are searching for a male suspect in the assault of a student with a cowbell amid the post-game celebration at last Saturday’s Egg Bowl game against arch-rival Ole Miss, the Starkville Daily News reports.
MSU Police Department Sgt. Brad Massey said the male victim, 21, whose name is not being released amid concerns for his continued safety, suffered a severe head wound after the suspect struck him in the head with a cowbell.
The victim and the suspect — also believed to be an MSU student — were in the student section bleachers in the north end zone at Davis Wade Stadium at Scott Field near the northwest gate, Massey said Wednesday.
The victim had some friends from Ole Miss with him in the stands, and, after MSU won the football game, some verbal sparring occurred with the suspect that turned violent, culminating in the victim being struck with the cowbell, Massey said.
“It split his head open pretty badly,” said Massey, who would not comment on whether alcohol may have played a role in the incident.
The victim was taken by ambulance to Oktibbeha County Hospital, where he was treated and released late Saturday night, Massey said. The suspect, however, has yet to be identified, he said.
The suspect is described as a college-age white male who is 5 feet, 8 inches tall, weighs between 150 and 160 pounds and has very dark brown or black hair. The suspect was wearing a dark green Under Armour MSU hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans, according to the description given to Massey by the victim.
With most Bulldog fans remaining in the stands after the game ended, it is believed that several people may have witnessed the assault, Massey said in a report in the Starkville Daily News.
“Everybody stayed in the stands and celebrated the victory, so somebody saw what happened,” said Massey.
Anyone who have witnessed the assault or have information about the incident is encouraged to call the MSU Police Department at 325-2121 or Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers at 1-800-530-7151.
All Crime Stoppers tips are confidential and could result in a reward of up to $1,000 for the caller if the tip leads to an arrest in the assault case or any felony crime.
The suspect, once arrested, faces an aggravated assault charge, which is a felony offense and, upon conviction, carries a penalty of anywhere from 1 to 20 years in prison under state law, Massey said.
Would your inability to stay away also fall under "inferiority complex" category?
UM self-declared elitism? The only one who thinks that is apparently you. I have several friends who graduated from MSU, and actually watch the Egg Bowl every year with one of them. He has enough maturity to realize that its just a game. Guess you have an inferiority complex since you didn't go to UM since you keep mentioning it ...
Anyway, as I said, I'm through with this. Enjoy your exchange with someone else who wants to prove his/her immaturity too ...
And don't you realize that "Hotty Toddy", or whatever it is, is the most moronic sports chant ever?? My most memorable moment of that dumb chant was when I went to the Tad Pad to see Adam Sandler in 1997. Some UM fans yelled it (of course) like it was something to be proud of, and Adam said, "Oh my god, it sounds like a bunch of guys having sex with each other."
Maybe in your mind this was the Rebs season to get to the SEC champ game. I just don't see a program one year removed from going winless in the SEC as a legitimate contender for a championship.
Thanks for the congrats. I'm sure the Dogs will enjoy their postseason too ...
Anyways, I'm NOT anti-TSBU. I honestly hope that they have a decent team over the next few years. It will be so much sweeter when HDN and the Rebs win if it actually means something. And unlike most of you cowbell wielding fanatics, unless TSBU is playing the Rebs, I always want to see them win. I don't take pride in any Mississippi school being seen as a cupcake win for another school. Guess some folks think their school is more important than where they call home...
I'm done with this thread. Hope you enjoy watching your pups in the post-season this year...

Man, the rebs are leaps and bounds out in front us in the conference this year according to olemrrebel."
And according to anyone who matters too. Lets see, is The School Beneath Us playing in a New Year's bowl? Or in any post-season bowl? If TSBU's schedule is so tough, why make it that way? If you had a proven record of winning those tough games (and I don't mean the "moral victories" you will probably proclaim) then scheduling a tough schedule is smart. If you're like most teams in the nation, it ain't.
Anyways, this discussion is far from it's original topic of cowbells and why MSU chooses to defy the SEC in continuing to use them as weapons.
DocJ,
No DocJ, the question is why make TSUN's schedule so easy?? The answer is to set up the one and only chance you and yours would have at an SEC Championship this decade. Yes, you're going to a New Year's bowl, but the "plan" was for so much more. Wow!! It kind of sounds like the plan for the rebs in baseball every year. Linda Lovelace has nothing on you guys. Congrats!!

No, last year we actually did come up STRONG and you know it. And we're right back there this year too. You'd love to be where we are or have been the past two years, 30 years, or any other decade you want to talk about as opposed to your team. It ain't my fault you pull for arguably the worst team in the history of the league. And if history (recent or past) is any indication, it won't matter whose recruits we play with, end of the year, we'll still be ahead of you.
Did someone beat you over the head with a cowbell son?
olemrrebel even you have to admit that after Alabama the SEC West as a whole was very down this year. This was it TSUN. This was your best chance since the 60's to win a overall SEC Championship. Most strength of schedule rankings have you 90th or lower while most have MSU in the top five. Let me break that down for you....this was the perfect storm for you, but like everything else when it matters for TSUN you choked. Well, I do have to give you guys props; I mean you have four SEC wins to our three. Man, the rebs are leaps and bounds out in front us in the conference this year according to olemrrebel.

Let's see what happens when Nutt runs out of Orgeron's players. The guy never had to battle for in-state recruits while at Arkansas, and we're already seeing him freak out w/ several comments (i.e. blaming others schools for detering kids from showing up when the freaking Klan is there).
"We love it when UM fans use crap that happened 30 years ago as their selling-points. That's like trying to sell a crack house by saying it was a good neighborhood back when Nixon was President."
Or like proclaiming that a program is on the way up based on one year under a first year coach ...

Destroyed? That be a 45-0 loss not a 2td one.
Tis better to stall near the top than stay at the bottom. Every year I hear State fans talk about how they are on the way up, especially when they get a new coach. Croom was gonna be your savior. Now it's Mullen, but you are still dead last in the west. Our new coach won 9 last year, beat yall 45-0 in the worst butt-kicking I've ever seen, and beat #7 TT in Cotton Bowl AFTER an 0-8 season. So look no further than last year and tell me how we CHOKED? Look, I'm not gonna change your mind, and you aren't mine, so why try?
Olemrrebel what was the score this year? I see no reference to it in your post. Oh, that's right, the team that finished dead last in the west destroyed your program. Also, I'm sorry if I want my program to win not only Western division championships, but overall championships as well. Ole Miss has done neither in the last twenty plus years. I really got a laugh about your so called "savior" point; it reminded me of Coach O. The biggest favor we ever did TSUN is when we sent that chump packing and you returned the favor the next year. It's also great to know that to you last year is as good as it will ever get....hey we do agree on something.
Then, one drunk hits another at a silly ballgame, and the board lights up. 41 comments! Take that, Rheta, Patsy, Marty, Galen, et al!
One thing about it, Northeast Mississippi has its priorities in order, by golly!
