JACKSON — Gov. Haley Barbour said Thursday he is cutting almost $54.3 million from Mississippi’s nearly $6 billion budget.

His announcement Thursday was the second round of spending reductions Barbour has made since the fiscal year started July 1.

He says he anticipates making another $160 million in cuts before the year ends June 30.

Combining the latest cuts with an earlier round in September, Barbour has now sliced about $220 million. November marked the 15th consecutive month for Mississippi’s tax collections to fall short of expectations.

Barbour says the cuts Thursday include a 5 percent reduction in Medicaid spending, which will take effect in February. He says he wants to give physicians and other Medicaid providers time to get used to the idea that their payments will be reduced.

The new reductions do not include education, which already had been cut in September.

now creep I dont think you know anybody that lost medicaid because of anything Haley has done...true he has held the legislature's feet to the fire more than once. These new cuts are going to effect physicians and hospitals more than anything else. What do you think about the senate voting to rape medicare? As far as Haley having no respect, thats ludicrous. He's chairman of the Republican governor's association and was chairman of the RNC so SOMEBODY respects him. TRUE his speech drives me crazy. He reminds me of Jerry Clower, BUT if you listen to what he says, he consistently states his belief of not raising taxes and letting capitalism solve many of our problems. I believe Haley is possibly the best politician since Reagan and he would prove to be even more fiscally conservative than Reagan. I've been watching him for years and I've really come to have alot of respect for him. Generally when someone criticizes him, the reasons I hear are idiocy. If you'll do some research into our state's financial situation when he took over, and how it is even now with the state of the economy, you'll see what he's accomplished...very impressive...

Barbour comes off like a mealy mouthed redneck to most of the country. Let him run. He hasn't got a snowball's chance in hell. It's not like he's lifted Mississippi in any meaningful way, so what exactly is he going to do for the country? Throw disabled people off medicaid in a wider circle?

butler I HOPE he IS on the ticket. He's the only possible candidate that I know of that has a backbone. The first part of your post seems to rail against the legislature for spending money (which Haley is against) but then you criticize him for possibly having presidential aspirations...looks to me that if this IS what he's planning, he has certainly remained focused on the problems of Mississippi...

Well, we could just pull in our horns and live within our means...

OMG! That sounds so much like our parents, doesn't it? What WAS I thinking?

If he would get someone to run Medicaid effectively then it might be different. There are several new drups that have gone Generic but Medicaid in all thier wisdom will only pay for the bran name at about 5 times the cost. Real good use of our tax dollars.

I think instead of paying tax dollars..perhaps why dont we just hand over our hard working money over to the Legislators in Jackson so they can just go ahead and spend it on themselves, the special sessions, and blow it on other things as they usually do (like Newly built roads we really dont need and taking over people's houses and robbing thier lives of memories, etc) It is TIME For Mississippi to turn things around and GET IT RIGHT!! But that is okay...as long as our Fearless leader ends up on the next presidential ticket...HE really cares less!!
