Senate panel OKs reduced school funding

JACKSON — The Senate Appropriations Committee has approved a proposal that would count $65 million from the federal government as part of the state's funding next year for the Mississippi Adequate Education Program.

The money had been part of a federal jobs bill passed in 2010. It was provided to school districts to help retain jobs.

Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Doug Davis, R-Hernando, says many districts saved the federal money, which "freed up enough local money to be used in fiscal year 2012."

MAEP is a complex formula that changed the way the state distributes money to its school districts.

Mississippi Superintendent of Education Tom Burnham says he doesn't think the state Board of Education will "be comfortable with" the plan.
