Mississippi State's Derek Pegues was stunned when nobody called his name in the NFL Draft over the weekend.
So now he'll take his time in finding the right team.
Pegues, a free safety/kick returner and a three-time all-SEC selection, will work out for the Chicago Bears this weekend. If he doesn't sign with them, he will do the same for the New York Giants the next weekend.
His agent, Bus Cook, expected Pegues to go in the fourth or fifth round. Some early projections had him there, but later analysis pegged him as a possible seventh-rounder.
Cook blamed slow times in the 40-yard dash - including a 4.69 a the NFL Combine - with affecting Pegues' stock.
"That's the Bible for those people," Cook said.
Last season, Pegues had 50 tackles and two interceptions, and he averaged 22.8 yards per kickoff return. He leaves Starkville as the SEC's career leader in kickoff returns (112) and kickoff return yardage (2,484).
Pegues did not return a message seeking comment.
Let's make a dealTwo of his former teammates signed deals on Sunday: Linebacker Dominic Douglas (St. Louis Rams) and strong safety Keith Fitzhugh (New York Jets).
For Ole Miss, guard Maurice Miller has signed a contract with Tampa Bay, according to his agent.
Linebacker Tony Fein is believed to be in discussions with Seattle, fullback Jason Cook with Baltimore and linebacker Ashlee Palmer with Buffalo.
