OXFORD – A week from Signing Day, Ole Miss coaches are hoping to lure a few more prospects into what they believe will be a solid class.
Tuesday, the staff was still waiting to hear on Hollandale-Simmons defensive lineman Carlos Thompson, rated a four-star prospect by Rivals.com.
The 6-1, 270-pound tackle entertained coaches from both Ole Miss and Mississippi State in his home this week, this after taking an official visit to Ole Miss over the weekend. Thompson is expected to visit North Carolina this weekend.
In addition to Thompson, the Rebels hosted recruits in a number of other priority positions, wide receiver and cornerback among them.
Noxubee County wide receiver Vincent Sanders, according to reports, had a very good visit but continues to consider Florida State and Mississippi State. Rivals rates Sanders as the No. 2 prospect in Mississippi.
Cornerback is an important position for Ole Miss, which loses starters Cassius Vaughn and Marshay Green.
The class does not currently contain a cornerback, and a lot of effort is being spent on Hollywood Hills, Fla., high school prospect Tony Grimes, as well as Copiah-Lincoln Community College four-star corner Dequan Menzie.
It's possible that Menzie, as an older player, could start right away.
The class is currently ranked No. 33 by Scout and No. 35 by Rivals. It's heavy with offensive linemen, three, and defensive linemen four.
East Mississippi Community College quarterback Randall Mackey is expected to sign and compete for the job in the fall.
Community College transfers Wayne Dorsey (defensive end) and Damien Jackson (safety) are enrolled and will go through spring drills, as will prep offensive lineman Chase Hughes.
