JACKSON — Mississippi children won't be seeing ads for sports drinks or expensive athletic shoes on their school buses anytime soon.

The Senate has killed a bill that would've let local school districts allow advertising inside or outside the big yellow buses.

The bill passed the House last month, with supporters saying it was an innovative way for districts to generate money when times are tight. Opponents say children shouldn't be exposed to advertising in a setting where they're not supervised by parents.

The bill would've banned ads for alcohol, tobacco or junk food or for political or religious causes.

Senators killed the entire proposal Wednesday.

The bill is House Bill 1233.

What I'm thinking they could do is display ads like many city buses use. I figure that atleast 95% of the ads that would have been displayed would've came from locally owned businesses.

"Opponents say children shouldn't be exposed to advertising in a setting where they're not supervised by parents." Really? In today's world of 3G mobile phones with data packages, 24 hour cable TV, internet, and satellite radio, do they really think our children are not already exposed to unsupervised advertising? I mean advertising is already ubiquitous.

I am not saying it should be allowed, I would need more time to consider it, but that excuse I found absolutely laughable.

yeah jason, im halfway with you on this one....maybe dont let the ads be painted on (permantly) but perhaps slap some of those magnetic advertisements in there or on there. Obviously this can be done tastefully, and not look like graffiti. .

But, it's probably better off not to do this. I probably would have voted no on this one, but would have at least had an open mind on it.

My only question is why vote against this? I know it is kinda silly to put ads on a school bus, but when money is short you got to think outside the box some.
